Today is Valentine's Day, also believed to be the feast of St. Valentine. There are several identities given to this saint, among them that he is a martyr, who died for the faith by refusing to repudiate his Christianity. Another is that of a saintly bishop who made a name for himself as a Prince of the Church.

There are others, one even linking the celebration of this particular day to orgies being indulged in by pagans who gave their own meanings to it. This is the observance of the so-called Lupercalian feast where people, mostly young men and women, splurge on food, liquor and erotic activities.

Never in history has the celebration of Valentine's Day been more popular than in this generation when even countries that used to frown on Christian practices, have adopted many of the customs associated with it. Where the day used to be marked only by Christians, Catholics especially, now we hear of countries with various religious beliefs, enjoying the sending of Valentine cards, flowers, gifts, and indulging their loved ones with special attention. For some, it has even become a family day, approximating Mothers' Day, or even Thanksgiving.

When we come down to it, however, it appears that the practices may have changed, or may have been modified, but there are still similarities to those of olden times. We still show love and care on this day, we remember the saint after whom it is named (although it is doubtful if many remembered to honor him with holy masses or prayers). Lovers, genuine or legitimate ones, reserve the day for each other, and illicit ones do the same, defying vows they have made.

As for the orgies and indulgent practices of old, we have the crass commercialism that now prevails over the day, with businesses taking advantage of it.

Times are, indeed, a-changing, but for those who still think of today in its original context, we still wish: A Happy Valentine's Day and may it be a true day of love for you!*
