Probac trips Davies

Probac survived a late rally by Davies-Republic Hardware to score a 92-88 victory Wednesday night and strengthen its quarterfinal bid in the 6th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Cup Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym in Bacolod City.

The win was Probac's third in four games that gave it a piece of second place in Bracket B with Krua Thai-Ice Monsters, behind pacesetter Magnolia, which totes a 4-0 slate. New ST Marketing and BBC remained in striking distance with identical 2-1 records, followed by LXG (1-3).

Davies is still winless in four games just like Rentas Knights.

Talisay Basketball Athletic Club leads Bracket A with a 3-0 card with Mambukal, AMG-Pawnshop/Summit and Po's-Panasonic in a three-way tie for second.

The Top three teams from each bracket will advance to the quarterfinals.

Kirk Tupas produced clutch plays for Probac with two minutes left, scoring on a layup, making a steal on the ensuing play and fed a streaking Bobby Agsam for another easy basket for an 86-80 advantage.

Davies had mounted a 12-2 blast early in the fourth period and Cesar Ordas hit four straight points to cut the lead, 82-80, with 3:19 left, before Tupas came to the rescue.

But Ordas completed a three-point play to cut the lead to three but Yen Dolar made a triple and made another lay-up to seal the game for Probac.

Ren Ren Lacson and Dolar paced Probac with 14 points, while Tupas finished with 12. Kenderson Hao and Wendell Fernandez chipped in 10 apiece with Agsam finishing with 9.

Ordas led the losing effort with 18 points with Manny Merelos picking up 12. John Montemayor posted 10. *CPT
