Jail warden requests
for cell dividers, guns

The warden of the Negros Oriental Detention and Rehabilitation Center is requesting the Office of Gov. George Arnaiz to finance the construction of a dividing wall to separate female and male inmates.

Warden Jeffrey Araula said he made the request after being informed that a female detainee got pregnant by a male detainee of the NODRC.

He said that even if the cells of the male and female inmates are separate, they can easily interact with each other because of the lack of a structure dividing their cells.

Araula said sexual relationship among inmates, though a private matter, should be discouraged because the female detainees risk being impregnated by their male counterparts.

He added that Arnaiz has not yet replied to his request.

Meanwhile, Araula said he is also proposing the purchase of firearms for the NODRC jail guards, who, he said, are amenable to personally pay for the guns on installment, provided that the provincial government pays for them in advance.

Arnaiz, who said he will study Araula's proposal, however, expressed reservation over the proposals, saying it may create problems later.*RA
