gain semifinals

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan --- The Region VI women's volleyball squad registered an impressive 25-13, 25-13, 25-15 victory over Western Mindanao yesterday to gain a semifinals berth in the National Private Schools and Athletics Association Games volleyball tournament at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center here.

The Western Visayas squad bannered by the University of St. La Salle players, counted on the precise setting of Ola Lopez and blistering spikes of Nene Bautista to post their third win in as many games.

The Region VI volleybelles of Roger Banzuela eye an elimination round sweep when it battles Cagayan Valley at 2 p.m. today.

The Region VI cagebelles also earned a berth in the final four despite suffering a 31-60 setback at the hands of National Capital Region as the men's basketball team of Western Visayas also faltered against Calabarzon, 63-57, to drop to 1-1.

The Western Visayas women's basketball team will battle defending champion Region XI at 3 p.m. tomorrow, while the Region VI cagers, collide with Central Mindanao at 7:30 a.m., before taking on Central Luzon at 1:30 p.m.

"Despite the loss, we are still confident that, could reach the semifinals. We have been in these situations before," Elvis Atinado, coach of the Region VI cagers who finished third in the National PRISAA Games in Zamboanga last year, told the DAILY STAR.

The Western Visayas male spikers, who finished second in the national meet in Zamboanga last year, also suffered a 22-25, 25-12, 22-25, 22-25 loss to Central Luzon, bannered by Angeles University Foundation.

The Stephen Patrona-mentored Region VI men's volleyball team tries to keep its title hopes alive when it clashes with the National Capital Region at 9 a.m.

The reigning titlist sepak takraw team of Western Visayas registered a resounding 2-0, 2-0 win against Northern Mindanao to improve its win-loss card to 3-0.*CIT
