BUT NORTHERN LUZON STILL ON TOP

LINGAYEN --- Ilonggo Cel Joy Papa led Western Visayas by claiming two of the five golds won by the region yesterday in the National Private Schools and Athletics Association Games athletics competitions at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center Oval here.

Papa snared the gold medal in the women's 200-meter event after booking a time of 27.55 seconds to edge Southern Mindanao's bet Janice Sinoy, who posted a 27.58 sec. clocking, and Russel Camero of Northern Luzon (Ilocos) finishing in 27.80 sec.

The Iloilo standout also spearheaded the women's 4x400-m relay squad that took the gold in four minutes and 10.60 sec., beating Northern Luzon (4:13.48) and Central Visayas (4:14.45) in the final event yesterday.

Joining Papa, who won her third and fourth golds of the national meet, were University of St. La Salle student Ma. Rosario Baranao, Jennilyn Progio and

Marigen Campos.

Region VI brought home a total of five golds, one silver and three bronzes yesterday to improve its medal-haul to 12-10-8, good for third place in the athletics hostilities. Northern Luzon leads the athletics medal race with a 17-19-3 haul, while Southern Mindanao has 17-14-10 medals for second place.

Progio also won the silver in the women's 100-m hurdles in 16.87 sec. behind Melanie Magbanua of Calabarzon who snatched the gold with a 16.83-sec. clocking. Baranao placed third with a time of 17.5 sec.

Campos, a student at the Filamer Christian College in Capiz, also won a bronze for Western Visayas in the 800-m race with a 2:27.20 clocking. Judelyn Miranda of Southern Mindanao topped the event (2:20.70), while Camero placed second (2:26.80).

John Perry Jorca grabbed the lone medal for the Region VI men's athletics team yesterday with a bronze in the 800-m run after booking a time of 2:03.40.

Northern Luzon bets Romy De Guzman and Brian Aquinde finished first and second, respectively, with clockings of 2:00.40 and 2:02.00.

Southern Mindanao dominated the hostilities yesterday with a 10-2-1 medal tally, while Northern Luzon took four golds, 12 silvers and two bronzes.

Twenty gold medals will be disputed today at the end of the athletics competitions.*CIT
