La Salle throwers triumph

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan - The Region VI men and women's athletics squads snared seven golds, highlighted by the victory of University of St. La Salle standout Mayven De Oro in women's discus throw, yesterday on Day Two of the National PRISAA athletics hostilities at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center here.

De Oro's golden heave in women's discus throw of 32.24 meters gave Western Visayas its first gold in the national meet after being shutout in the athletics competitions Monday.

"I really practiced hard for this event. I guess my determination has been greatly rewarded," De Oro told the DAILY STAR.De Oro, who also won the gold medals in the NOPSSCEA sports meet and Regional PRISAA Games in Bacolod City, defeated teammate Lovely Rose Olaira (29.50-m) and Claudia Cagang of Central Visayas (28.68-m) for the gold.

Another USLS student-athlete, Harold Juarez gave the WV men's athletics team its first gold when he topped the discus throw with a 33.52-m effort.

Juarez beat Darrel Cabanero of Northern Mindanao (33.29-m) and compatriot Derek Gabriel Kho (31.80-m) to claim the top honors.

Cel Joy Papa added another gold for the Region VI women's team when she posted a 1:00.25 clocking in the women's 400-m run, ahead of Ilocos region bets Russel Camero (1:00.51) and Liza Casaña (1:02.06).

The women's 4x100-m relay squad of WV, composed of Papa, Jennilyn Progio and La Salle runners Jonalyn Pula and Ma. Rosario Baranao, hauled four golds with a time of 51.89 seconds.

The Region VI relay team beat Ilocos (52.01) and Northern Mindanao (52.12). Western Visayas also got four silvers in the women's classical relay with a two minutes and 25.98 second-clocking, behind Ilocos (2:23.90).

Hanny Jean Delfin also won a silver for WV in the women's 5,000-m run with a time of 19:15.20, while defending men's long jump champion Rechie Javillo of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos missed out on a gold medal, after his 6.95-m leap was only good for a silver.

Teodoro Nonato of Northern Mindanao ruled the men's long jump with a 7.32-m effort with Marvin Dave Villar of Region VI grabbing the bronze with a 6.51-m leap.

Ilocos leads the athletics medal race with 13 gold, seven silvers and one bronze with Northern Mindanao (7-12-9) in second. Western Visayas (7-9-5) is in third, followed by Northern Luzon with one gold and a bronze.
Twenty-one more golds are up for grabs today in the athletics hostilities that will end Thursday. *CIT
