LINGAYEN - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday asked collegiate athletes to set their sights on winning the first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines in 2008 in Beijing.

Arroyo issued the call at the opening of the National Private Schools and Athletics Association Games at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center here.

"I am encouraging all of you (National PRISAA athletes) to do your best so that you will have chances to represent the country and emerge as gold medal winners in the Olympics in Beijing, China," Arroyo said in her three-minute keynote speech.

LINGAYEN - The Western Visayas men and women's volleyball squads trounced their separate rivals yesterday even as the Region VI cagebelles nipped Central Visayas, 42-37, at the start of the National Private Schools and Athletics Association Games at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center here.

But the Western Visayas contingents in athletics faltered when it suffered a gold medal shutout on Day One. Western Visayas won two silvers and three bronzes going into the second day of competitions where 24 more golds are at stake.

Pawnshop triumph

Magnolia Nutri-oil claimed its third straight win Friday night, routing Krua Thai-Ice Monster, 99-75, in a battle of unbeaten teams in the 6th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Cup Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

With the win, Magnolia improved to 3-0 and grabbed the solo lead in Bracket B, while KT-Ice Monster dropped to 2-1.

Other weekend games saw Buddy's beating YBAC, 120-85, to boost its record to 2-1 and AMG Pawnshop-Summit scoring a close 100-97 win over RG Purefoods.
