Man mistaken as escapee
shot dead by jail warden

Relieved Himamaylan City Jail Warden Nilon Magbanua appears to be heading for more trouble, this time for reportedly shooting a person he mistook for a jail escapee Saturday, the police said.

Supt. Milko Lirazan, Himamaylan police chief, yesterday identified the victim shot by Magbanua in Brgy. 4 poblacion, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental as Daniel Ortega Jr.

Lirazan said Magbanua, who was stripped of his position as jail warden of Himamaylan City for the escape of two inmates on Jan. 31, confessed to having shot Ortega.

Police investigations show that Ortega, who sustained a lone gunshot wound in his right breast, was declared dead on arrival at the Valeriano Gatuslao Memorial Hospital in Himamaylan.

Magbanua led a team of BJMP members who were conducting manhunt operations on the two fleeing escapees.

A day after the two inmates bolted from the jail, escapee Elmo Gambalan was captured by BJMP personnel in Brgy. 3 poblacion, Himamaylan City.

The other escapee, identified as Rene Alvarez, who is facing murder charges, was still at-large as of yesterday, Lirazan said.

Magbanua was replaced by Inspector Edwin Pabontoso as jail warden of Himamaylan City.

Lirazan said he has received reports that an amicable settlement is being worked out by Magbanua with the family of the victim.*GPB
