PNP: 25 hold-up men,
snatchers rejoin society
BUT POLICE MONITORING THEM: HIDALGO

Just when you thought the Dumaguete City streets were safe with the capture of 25 holduppers and snatchers last year, the police now say that these suspects have either been released, or are about to be released from jail.

Chief Inspector Manuel Hidalgo, Dumaguete Police chief, said the suspects are either out on bail or have gained freedom as the cases filed against them have been dismissed.

"This is because the victims did not show up in court during the hearings," lamented Hidalgo "The victims lose interest in pursuing the case after they recover their stolen belongings," he added.

DENR to help in
Apo Island water problem

The source of potable water supply on Apo Island remains a problem everyday, Oriental Negros Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Antonio Cabrido said.

As far as could be recalled, residents of Apo Island have had to buy potable water from the towns of Dauin and or Zamboanguita by the gallon or by drums. With the increasing number of inhabitants and tourists on Apo Island, water consumption is also increasing and the problem is also getting bigger, Cabrido said.

He disclosed that he is going to Cebu City this week to study the technology used in Shangrila Hotel and other hotels in Mactan, where seawater is being processed for drinking.

PSC to launch 2
athletes programs

While the nation continues to rejoice over the stunning victory of boxer Manny Pacquiao against Mexican Erik Morales, the Philippine Sports Commission has started preparations to launch two programs to train and develop elite athletes and coaches in the country.

The Philippine Sports Institute and the National Unified Sports Program will be launched by the PSC on February 16 and 17 at the PSC Philsports center in Pasig City, PSC chairman William Ramirez said.

Ramirez said there is an urgent need for a national center of sports excellence for the training and development of elite athletes and coaches for high performance sports as a means to implement the national program founded on the international principle of "Sports for All."
