DENR to help in
Apo Island water problem

The source of potable water supply on Apo Island remains a problem everyday, Oriental Negros Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Antonio Cabrido said.

As far as could be recalled, residents of Apo Island have had to buy potable water from the towns of Dauin and or Zamboanguita by the gallon or by drums. With the increasing number of inhabitants and tourists on Apo Island, water consumption is also increasing and the problem is also getting bigger, Cabrido said.

He disclosed that he is going to Cebu City this week to study the technology used in Shangrila Hotel and other hotels in Mactan, where seawater is being processed for drinking.

Cabrido disclosed plans of adopting the technology in Apo Island so that tourists and residents will no longer have a problem over potable drinking water.

He also said there is need for a holistic approach on the island's solid waste management program, and urged that the potable water supply program be pursued.*JG
