ST quintet
picks up first win

New ST Marketing banked on a balance offensive to beat Davies-Republic Hardware, 86-76, Wednesday night for its first win in the 6th Tan Kek Pin Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

The win, ST's first in two games, did not come easy as it clawed its way back from a nine-digit advantage in the first quarter with a strong performance in the third frame and a sound defensive effort in the fourth to deal Davies its second straight setback.

Meanwhile, Bracket B co-leaders Magnolia and Krua Thai part ways at 6:30 tonight, before Buddy's, which is fresh from a victory, battles struggling YBAC.

BBC improved to 2-1, winning by forfeiture over LXG in the other game yesterday after only nine players showed up for LXG, one player short of the minimum required by league organizers for a game.

Mark Binguan paced New ST with 11 points, while Te Espejo, Peewee Demonteverde and Simon Guevarra added 10 apiece. Dominic Ciocon chipped in 9 points.

Davies raced to a 26-17 lead in the first quarter with Roberto Uy Sang and Jeffrey Salanap scoring 8 points apiece but Demonteverde and Vincent Gamboa helped ST trim the advantage, 43-38, at halftime.

Rejuvenated by the break, ST turned its game up a notch, putting emphasis on defense that led to easy fastbreak conversion in the third period, where it scored 33, including 11 from Binguan to overhaul the lead.

Antonio Rogacion led Davies with 11 points with Aaron Guevarra and John Montemayor contributing 10 each. Salanap and Carlo De la Torre made 8 points apiece. *CPT
