Tanpinco, Piccio competing
in Southern Ladies Open

Southeast Asian Games silver medalist Anya Tanpinco and local jungolfer Mia Piccio take a crack at one of the most prestigious crowns staked in local ladies' golf - the Southern Ladies Open - and against some of the finest players in the country starting today at the tree-lined Del Monte Golf Club in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

A standout from the Negros Occidental Jungolf Foundation Inc., the 13-year-old Piccio aims to continue her rise among the ranks in the 43rd staging of the annual event organized by the National Golf Association of the Philippines.

Piccio made a strong statement last year when she finished runner-up to Frances Bondad in the Philippine Lady Amateurs, where she beat Villaroman along the way.

But she will have her hands full against the likes of Lora Roberto, Villaroman and Tanpinco, all from Southwoods, who are expected to head the chase for the crown in the absence of Bondad and two other fancied players in Jayvie Agojo and Debbie de Villa. Another player to watch is jungolfer Crystal Superal, who with Piccio will spearhead the bid of the youth brigade in the three-day event. Also seeing action are Aileen Yao, Chihiro Ikeda and local favorites Eva Miņoza and Lovelyn Guioguio. *CPT
