15 fraternity neophytes
nabbed at initiation rites

Fifteen persons 11 of them minors, and allegedly members of the Dumaguete City chapter of the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity, were apprehended by the Valencia Philippine National Police while holding initiation rites at Sitio Ogahong, Barangay Balugo, Valencia, Oriental Negros, Sunday afternoon.

Policemen caught the group in the act of conducting physical tests on their recruits, using paddles.

Except for four who are in their late teens and early 20s, most of those nabbed were minors aged between 15 and 17, who are residents of Dumaguete, and Sibulan and Valencia towns.

'New businesses make
economy more vibrant'

Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin Perdices said Tuesday that the new business hubs sprouting in the city has given employment opportunities for Negrenses, aside from revenues for the city.

Perdices, who was at the inauguration and blessing of the new RM building at corner Rovira Road and North national highway, also said that he is happy that new investments coming to the city are making local economy more vibrant.

Other businesses also expected to come in this year are the Robinsons group that has acquired a 6-hectare lot from the property of Julio Sy in Calindagan, Dumaguete City.

PHO CHIEF SAYS
NegOr countrysides lack docs

The Oriental Negros government is starting to experience the difficulty of hiring highly-trained doctors for key positions, and provincial health officer Ely Villapando attributes this to the growing number of physicians seeking work abroad as nurses.

Villapando said the province has been looking for applicants for chiefs of the Bindoy District Hospital and the Canlaon City Hospital but none have applied up to now.

He said Dr. Edgardo Pialogo, head of the Bindoy District Hospital, will be transferred shortly to the Guihulngan District Hospital, while Dr. Edward Sibala, chief of the Canlaon City Hospital, is leaving for abroad.
