Magnolia, Mambukal
register second wins

Magnolia-Nutrioil, Mambukal Summer Resort and Talisay Basketball Athletic Club notched their second victories over the weekend as they set the early pace in the 6th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Cup at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

Behind center Andy Angudong and Bert Celis, Mambukal repulsed Tangub Basketball Association, 111-97, Sunday, while Talisay, with Bryan Alunan and Nonoy Hugnatan at the helm, defeated Your Basketball Athletic Club, 110-84, in the second game. The wins gave TBAC and Mambukal a share of the Bracket A lead with identical 2-0 records.

Meanwhile, 2004 MVP Warren Alintano and ex-West Negros College standout Jojo San Miguel powered Magnolia-Nutrioil to an 80-69 triumph over BBC, 80-69, Saturday for the solo leadership in Bracket B at 2-0.

In the other Saturday game, LXG barged into the win column with a come-from-behind 89-71 win over Rentas Knights as Jose Vivero and Peter Galon combined for 25 points for the victory.

Also coming up with its first win was Buddy's, which defeated RG Purefoods, 88-83, after drawing another good scoring night from Tommy Andren.

Alintano topscored with 21 points, including 9 in the final period, where San Miguel scored 7 of his own, to help Magnolia overcome the BBC challenge led by Robert Buñol, who scored all of his team's 9 points in the fourth quarter.

Celis finished with 27 points, while Angudong chipped in 17. Mambukal also drew 15 and 14 points, respectively from Alain Baer and Rex Bayer.

Angudong and Celis gave their team a 28-15 lead at the end of the first quarter before Alex Sequiño led TBA's comeback scoring 13 points. But Mambukal countered with Russel Selga picking up 13 points and Rex Bayer and Romil Defensor chipping in 6 apiece.

Rodel Nicor had 12 points for Tangub with Martin Duff and Roger Macanan adding 11 and 9, respectively.

Alunan and Hugnatan scored 19 and 14 points, respectively and got ample support from Edgar Junto, Hans Gamboa, Tonton Belecina and Jude Bawiin, who joined hands for 42 more.

YBAC's losing effort was led by Liza, who made 16 points, while teammates Doods Siopan, Bombet Pumarejos, T Ortiz and Insik Smalley made 10 apiece.

Trailing 21-17 at the end of the opening quarter, Vivero, Galon, Joebeth Pedreso and Shinley Uy combined for 27 points as LXG took a 44-33 advantage at the half which it never relinquished.

The Knights were paced by Juffer Alojado and Glenn Monteposo with 12 points each and Jessie Debide with 11.

With Andren and Roy Pedreso firing on all cylinders, Buddy's seized a 31-14 lead at the end of the first period but RG Purefoods came back through Romeo Rojo and Jeffrey Caratao.

Buddy's however, opened with an 11-5 uprising in the fourth quarter for a 75-70 cushion as Andren scored 9 points. After four free throw conversions by Caratao, Buddy's responded with an undergoal stab by Orny de Asis and Andren completed a three-point play to seal the win.

Andren finished with 21 points, while Pedreso contributed 19. Nestor Moiten and Francis Andren chipped in 10 apiece. Caratao led RG with 20 points as Rojo made 17. *CPT
