A "tigbakay" or cockfighting activity sponsored by the town government of Sibulan, Oriental Negros, has been criticized for defying an existing ordinance passed by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

Mayor Antonio Renacia, however, said the activity, aside from generating revenues for the town, was also a means to invite Negrenses and tourists to the 96th anniversary of Sibulan

He said that, under a local ordinance, cockfight events may be held during important occasions in the town to invite tourists. He said the activity was managed by job order casual employees and held near a slaughterhouse in the town.

Renacia said the proceeds of the municipal-sponsored tigbakay will be used for the tourism projects of the locality.

Police, however, said that a minor commotion ensued during the event when a barangay kagawad from Dumaguete City insisted on going inside without paying the fees.*JG
