More support for
athletes sought anew
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

More national and local government support for the athletes and the grassroots development programs. A roadmap towards success in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. More Bacolod City-based athletes competing in the international arena.

These are among the sentiments of sports leaders, athletes and parents when asked about their "Hopes and Wishes for Negros Sports in 2007".

"After the success in the Asian Games, we should support the road for the quest of the Philippines' first Olympic gold medal in Beijing," Rep. Monico Puentevella, first vice-president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, said.

Tipon plans to build
house for parents
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon yesterday said he plans to start building a house for his parents, Vicente and Fe, with the P100,000 cash incentive he received from the Bacolod City government.

"I will allot the money for my parents' house at Regent Pearl Homes. We have already checked the lot and it is a nice place," Tipon, who hails from Sibucao in Barangay Banago, told the DAILY STAR.

The 24-year-old Tipon received the "Dungganon Nga Bacolodnon" award and a cash incentive of P100,000 from Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday after bringing home the gold in the bantamweight division of the Asian Games boxing competitions in Doha, Qatar.

Martinez vows to keep crown

Bacoleņa Mitchel Martinez, the acknowledged leader of the Philippine Women's Boxing Team, yesterday vowed to work harder to ensure that the Southeast Asian Games title stays with the Philippines, despite Thailand's home-court advantage next year.

"We will work hard to keep the title. We expect some hometown decisions but we will do our best," Martinez said yesterday at the Bacolod City Hall, where she attended the awarding rites for fellow boxer Joan Tipon.

An alumnus of Bacolod City National High School and the University of St. La Salle, Martinez won the gold in the lightweight division in last year's SEA Games in Bacolod.
