'Miracle on a tree'
draws thousands

Is it a miracle or just a hoax?

About two thousand people had gathered late yesterday at the Curbada Orange in Barangay Poblacion, San Enrique town, to view the "face of Christ" that appeared etched in black on the trunk of an 11-year-old acacia tree, DYEZ Aksyon Radyo reported.

San Enrique Mayor Jilson Tubillara told the DAILY STAR the "face of Christ" was noticed on the tree at about 10:30 p.m. on Christmas day.

Some say you can see it if you stand 10 feet away and the light hits the trunk of the tree, while others say they even see an angel hovering behind the face of Jesus, Tubillara said.

Curious residents of San Enrique and neighboring areas have gone to the site to see the "face of Christ" on the tree, but the mayor said they still have to determine how it got there. There could be some logical explanation for how it suddenly appeared on the tree trunk, Tubillara said.

Claims of having been cured of headaches and other ailments by people who touched the image have fueled the curiosity of many. Some try to peal off parts of the bark of the acacia tree while others bring pieces of cloth to touch the "face of Christ", after which they press the cloth on their bodies.

Fr. Walter Senero of the Philippine Independent Church told Aksyon Radyo the image was misleading the people and that it was not a miracle. Miracles only happen if one is good and believes in Christ teachings, he added.*CPG
