BY CEDELF P. TUPAS

Negros Occidental's newest sporting hero, Joan Tipon yesterday expressed gratitude to Negrenses for supporting him in his successful quest for a gold medal in the 15th Asian Games that ended last week in Doha, Qatar.

The 24-year-old boxer told the DAILY STAR that he will arrive in Bacolod City on Christmas Day. "To my fellow Negrenses, thank you for supporting and praying for me. I have been very blessed," Tipon, who will arrive with his family, said.

Talisay, which supported Tipon throughout his amateur boxing career, is set to honor the Asian Games gold medalist at the City's Public Plaza, Mayor Eric Saratan said last night.

Cadiznon Eleasar Azuelo came-from-behind to nip Jomel Sultan of Iloilo, 9-8, in the finals of the 1st 10-Ball 16-Under Open Billiard Tournament at the Time Out Bar and Restaurant in Bacolod City recently.

Trailing 7-8 in the race to nine championship match, the 16-year-old Azuelo won two straight racks to bring home the crown in the double-elimination, two-day hostilities.

Sultan, who was considered as the favorite in the finals, committed a bad shot aiming for the 9-ball in the last rack, giving Azuelo the chance to close out the game.
