15TH ASIAN GAMES
Tipon, Castro eye finals
PRAY FOR OUR BOXERS,
ONYOK URGES NEGRENSES

BY CEDELF TUPAS

Negros Occidental-born boxers Joan Tipon and Godfrey Castro hope to continue a rich Negrense tradition today when they go up against two world-rated foes from Thailand in the semifinals of the Asian Games boxing competitions in Doha, Qatar.

Once Tipon and Castro climb the ring tonight, they will not only try to move closer to give the Philippines a coveted gold medal in the Asiad, they will also aim to emulate the achievements of Negrense prizefighters, who made their mark in the international arena in the 1990s. Bagoeños Mansueto "Mansueto" Velasco and Reynaldo Galido and Bacoleño Elias Recaido gifted the Philippines with gold medals in the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan.

Two years later, Velasco settled for a silver that shined like gold in the Atlanta Olympics. Velasco's brother, Roel, won a bronze in the 1992 Barcelona Games, duplicating the feat of Candoni-born Leopoldo Serrantes in the 1988 Games in Seoul, Korea.

2 JINS, GABICA FALL SHORT
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Boxer Violito Payla assured the Philippines of one more silver medal last night on Day 10 of the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, following the second place finishes of cue artist Antonio Gabica and taekwondo jins Tshomlee Go and Mary Antoinette Rivera.

But Negrense athletes fell short of a medal with Cauayan-born Arniel Ferrera and Joebert Delicano of Victorias City failing to surpass the world-class field in their respective events in the athletics competitions at the Khalifa Stadium.

Ferrera, the 2005 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, registered a 57.50-meter effort to place seventh in men's hammer throw, while Delicano placed eighth in the men's long jump with a 7.56-m leap.

Himamaylan runner
rules nat'l marathon

Philippine Team member Julius Sermona of Negros Occidental grabbed the spotlight yesterday by reigning supreme in the 42-kilometer 30th National Milo Marathon in Manila.

After a three-year hiatus from the Milo competitions, the Libacao, Himamaylan native Sermona clocked in two hours and twenty-two minutes to bring home the crown together with a cash prize of P75,000.

The 28-year-old Sermona, a silver and bronze medalist in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games, bested the field that had other leg winners including two-time champion Cresenciano Sabal, former national athlete Allan Ballester and Yakult 10-Miler titlist Bernardo Desamito among others.
