Labor strikes dropped
in 2006: DOLE report

The Department of Labor and Employment in a report said the decline in strike incidence have been sustained this year, based on figures of the National Conciliation and Mediation Board.

The number of labor strikes dropped during the first semester of 2006, with only nine compared to 13 during the same period last year.

During the second half, the low strike incidence was sustained, with only three reported.

DOLE said the 12 strikes this year is 54 percent lower than the 26 recorded from January to November 2005.

As a result, man days lost due to strikes decreased by 58 percent, from 109,579 last year to only 46,134 this year.

The report added that with the resolution of plant level disputes, about 197,377 workers were spared from engaging themselves in actual strikes.

The number of workers affected by strikes also dropped from 8,496 from January to November, 2005, to 1,415 during the same period this year.

NCMB data also indicated that the number of notices of strikes and lockouts filed decreased by 25 percent, only 335 in January to November, 2006 from 447 during the same period last year.*
