PPHA holds
midyear convention

The Philippine Public Health Association will hold its 1st Midyear National Convention on the theme "Good Governance: Think Health!" today and tomorrow, at the Garden Royale, Kundutel, Goldenfields Commercial Complex in Bacolod City, a PPHA press release said.

Expected to attend are hundreds of health workers consisting of doctors, nurses, dentists, midwives, medical technologists, sanitary inspectors, medical laboratory and dental aides, and other professionals and persons engaged in services allied with public health all over the country, it also said.

The keynote speaker will be Roberto Pagdanganan, chairman and president of the Philippine International Trading Corporation.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia will welcome the participants while Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Maranon will give an inspiration message. First day convention speakers today are Barotac Viejo Mayor Raul Tupas who will take up "Interlocal Health Zone - Pharmacy, A Health Initiative"; CS director Fernando Mendoza - "Update of CS Ruling for Public Health Workers"; Population Commission director Vicente Molejona - "Population and Governance"; and Valladolid Mayor Ricardo Presbitero - "Interlocal Health Zone for Good Governance," the press release said.

The speakers tomorrow will be Dr. Florianne Valdez - "Updates on Management of Diarrhea"; Director Kenneth Ronquillo - "Pushing the Morale of Public Health Workers through Human Resource Planning"; and Khong Hun - Community-based Healthy Lifestyle Maintenance Program Through Mineral Supplementation," the press release added.*

Zonta Club
holds Rizal quiz bee

The Zonta Club of Bacolod sponsored the 1st Division Rizal Quiz Bee Contest at the Rizal Social Hall of Rizal Elementary School in Bacolod City recently, a press release from the club said.

Twenty-two public and private schools participated in the competition held in cooperation with the Department of Education.

Irene Bel Plotena, a third year student of the Bacolod City National High School won 1st place, plus P3,000 in cash, a trophy and a certificate. Her adviser was Lemuel Gonzaga, while school principal is Jose Dayot III, the press release also said.

Second place went to Ma. Roanne Grace Araneta, also a junior student at the Bacolod City National High School, who received P2,000 in cash prize, a trophy and a certificate. Third was I.C. Rech Causapin of Sum-ag National High School, whose adviser is Pinky Pamela Guanzon and school principal Warlito Rosareal, the press release said.

Members of the Board of Judges were Virgie Janiola, Lilia Lumawag and Ladgueria Veniegas. The winners will represent Negros Occidental in the Western Visayas Regional Contest in Iloilo. The national contest will be held in Manila.

Zonta Club of Bacolod is headed by Sally Ledesma as president, and Isabel Urra, vice president. Also present at the contest were club members Ruray Fuentebella and Diday Bilbao, the press release added.*
