PNP-7 INSPECTS POLICE STATIONS
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Some towns in southern Oriental Negros are being closely monitored by the police following intelligence reports that PNP stations in these areas are under threat from the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army.

Regional director of the PNP Central Visayas, Chief Supt. Silverio Alarcio disclosed on Monday that the localities of Zamboanguita, Dauin and Valencia are under close watch and the police forces in these towns are prepared for any hostile attacks. Alarcio and his PRO-7 staff, accompanied by provincial police director Sr. Supt. Omar Buenafe, made an unannounced visit Sunday in the three towns to check the combat readiness of their police stations.

The Philippine Coconut Authority has expressed alarm over reports that western countries were "copying" the lauric acid content of virgin coconut oil.

Deputy regional director of PCA Carlos Carpio, who was in Dumaguete City recently, said that American scientists were copying the coconut content, perceived to be a cure for HIV-AIDS.

Carpio disclosed that oils believed to be containing lauric acid are now available in regular grocery stores and sold at cheaper prices compared to coconut virgin oil. He added that unless the country could produce enough coconut supply, western counties would be forced to look for an alternative to coconut oil and jeopardize the Philippine's coconut industry.

Registration of
helpers mandated
BY RENE GENOVE

Employers will be required soon to register their house helpers and family drivers in the office of their respective barangay chairmen.

The requirement is contained in the newly-approved Ordinance No. 59 authored by Councilor Manuel Patrimonio to be implemented after all requisites for the law to take effect are completed. Under the measure, any person who hires a house helper or a family driver will be given 10 days from the date of hiring to register the worker with the barangay.

The barangay secretary is also required to communicate in writing to the city police department or National Bureau of Investigation on a monthly basis to ascertain if the worker has police records.
