Four Bacolod fishermen yesterday found a demolition bomb weighing
about 300 pounds in the territorial waters of Brgy. Sum-ag, Bacolod
City at about 7 a.m..
Tony Jainga, 50, of Zone 4, Calong-Calong, Brgy. Singcang-Airport,
Bacolod City, told the DAILY STAR yesterday, that he and two others
were fishing in the sea when they noticed a heavy object in their
fishnets.
Jainga said he dove to check the object and was surprised to
see the vintage bomb that was covered with thick mud and oysters.
He said he was planning to sell the item to a junk shop to make
money out of it.
Jainga's nephew, Resty, 21, claimed he, his uncle and their
two neighbors pulled the bomb to the seashore where their neighbors
gathered to see it.
The general purpose demolition bomb measures about one-meter
long, 12 inches in diameter with less than 150 kilos of Trinitrotoluene,
or TNT, Bacolod bomb expert Denny Montoya yesterday said.
Montoya said the demolition bomb that had been used for destroying
buildings, could withstand time, even up to 100 years even if it
is soaked in seawater. It could also explode when exposed to extreme
heat or hit with a hard object since its TNT content has no expiration,
he said.*DMG
