Negros Occidental is launching the "Green Philippine Highways" campaign today, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Livino Duran said yesterday.

A synchronized tree planting, roadside beautification and clean-up activities will be conducted along the 115 kilometer stretch of the West Philippine Nautical Highways and thoroughfares starting from the BREDCO Port to Kabankalan City up to the provincial boundary of Negros Occidental and Oriental Negros in Mabinay area, 10 a.m. today, a PENRO press release said.

The GPH project is aimed to realize "carbon sequestration initiative" along the whole stretch of the PGMA Nautical Highways that runs across three major groups of islands of the Philippines and traverses through the major provincial capitals, cities and municipalities of the country, the press release said.

The human chain will be created to link with the participants from the Oriental side of the province. It will also display a force of unity and cooperation among the Negrenses for the cause of environment, the press release said.

The launching program will start at 8 a.m. at the BREDCO port. This will be followed by a caravan up to the Municipality of Pontevedra where it will met the caravan coming from Mabinay.

At 10 a.m., there will be fireworks, church bells will ring and school bands will play along the highways, the press release said.*
