Education and Training Center School posted a 20-7 clobbering
of the Bulldogs yesterday to complete a three-game sweep for the
title of the 2006 Olympia Softball Tournament in Washington, USA.
The Bacolod City-based softbelles, mentored by Lagrimas Ciokon,
Vilda Benjamin and Dina Barlita, started their campaign with a 10-3
win over an Olympia-based squad, before edging the Mustangs, 2-1,
Wednesday.
Team coordinator Tess Himpolaran told the DAILY STAR that
ETCS was invited by the Filipino community in Washington to see
action in the tournament participated in by the different districts
of Olympia.
Spearheading ETCS' campaign were pitcher Veronica Belleza,
sisters Annalie and Nerissa Benjamin, and catcher Cherry Bartolome.
ETCS' title-haul came after the squad scored its best-ever
finish in the World Series by placing first runner-up in the Junior
League (girls' 13-14) division of the international tournament on
Monday.
The Bacoleņas absorbed a 0-8 setback at the hands of reigning
titlist, US-South, in the finals, after stunning powerhouse US-East,
6-0, in the semifinal round. Himpolaran said that she is happy with
the performances of the team in both the World Series and Olympia
tournaments.
"I'm very happy that the girls won the championship in
Olympia after finishing second in the World Series that was not
really expected," she said.
ETCS placed second runner-up in its two previous campaigns in
the Little League (girls' 11-12) competitions of the international
tournament in Portland, Oregon. After successful stints in the international
scene, the ETCS contingent will arrive in Los Angeles today. Their
tentative arrival in Bacolod is set on Sept. 4, Himpolaran said.
