Finance Secretary Margarito Teves is in the list of candidates
for the 2006 Most Outstanding Negrense awards to be given during
the 2006 Buglasan Festival of Festivals in October.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan recommended Teves to Gov. George
Arnaiz through a resolution sponsored by Board Member Ernesto Tijing
of the 3rd District and unanimously approved by the SP in their
recent session.
The resolution cited Secretary Teves, son of Rep. Herminio
Teves (3rd District, Oriental Neg.) as a pride of the Negrenses
for his contribution not only to the province but to the whole country.
Before his appointment as Finance Secretary on July 18, 2005,
Teves was the president and chief executive officer of the Land
Bank of the Philippines.
He chairs several LBP institutions that include Insurance
Brokerage, Inc., Leasing Corporation, Countryside Development Foundation,
Realty Development Corporation, Financial Services, Remittance Company
in the United States of America. He is also a member of the Board
of Directors/Trustees of major companies like the Ayala Foundations,
Inc., Meralco Electric Company, Pacific Plans, Inc., Alsons Cement
Corporation, and Asean Finance Corporation to mention a few.
Teves is also a member of the board of directors/governors
of several banking corporations as well as council member of the
National Food Authority and the Food Terminal, Inc. The Secretary
finished his higher education from prestigious schools in foreign
countries like William College in Massachussets, USA; City of London
College in London, England, and Universidad Central de Madrid in
Madrid, Spain.
He had served as president of the Philippine Economic
Society and founder of the Corporate Planning society of the Philippines.
As a representative of the 3rd District of Oriental Negros,
Teves is the principal co-author of important bills like the New
Central Bank Act, Export Development Act., Instituting the Dual
Training System in the Philippines Act, Safety Nets Act, Enhancing
Agricultural Competitiveness Act, Social Reform Act, and Tax Reforms
Act.
A congressman for three consecutive terms, Teves held chairmanship
of the committee on Rural Development and the Committee on Economic
Affairs and membership in several standing committees like appropriations,
ways and means, economic affairs, and some special committees like
food security, savings mobilizations, export promotion, poverty
alleviation and reforestation.
He was also a member of the executive and legislative councils
of the Philippines and a delegate to the constitutional convention.
Teves is married to Loretto Santos with whom he has three children,
Jennifer, Herminio Cirilo, and Kathyrine.*RG
