Bomb experts from the Explosive Ordnance Division of the Philippine
National Police have started a series of lectures on bomb awareness
in all police stations, business houses, and schools throughout
the province.
SPO4 Hilbert Arinaza, police provincial intelligence unit
chief, said the lectures aim to make participants aware of the danger
posed by explosives and what to do in case of emergencies. Arinaza
said the information drive is only part of the ongoing campaign
of the PNP to strengthen security measures in places vulnerable
to terroristic activities.
He said the PNP has intensified security measures in bus terminals
and seaports throughout the province.
Policemen have been posted in the seaports and wharves to
conduct baggage searches.
Effective Aug. 11 the Air Transportation Office ordered all
airports in the country to step up security measures following the
bomb threat at Heathrow airport in London.
Dumaguete City airport aviation security supervisor, SPO1 Zosimo
Umbal, said the measures include banning passengers from bringing
toothpastes, gels, lotion, and mineral water and placing them in
the check-baggage along with lighters, laptops, and knives. These
items can be used to make explosives by mixing them with other chemicals,
Umbal said.*RG
