Lack of 'political will'
in Dumaguete City hit
BY ALEX PAL

Wanted: A Bayani Fernando for Dumaguete City before 2007. This was one of the recommendations of a multi-sectoral gathering held at Silliman University in the city Wednesday and Thursday last week. The recommendation for a strong leader in Dumaguete similar to the example of Bayani Fernando, the chairman of the Metro Manila Development Authority, came amid complaints from the sectoral representatives that the city lacked political will in many aspects of governance, along with many other problems.

The multi-sectoral forum was an offshoot of a survey conducted by the Asian Institute of Management last year, which found that among cities with a population of less than 200,000, Dumaguete ranks 17th in terms of business cost, 27th in terms of dynamism of the local economy, 15th in terms of linkages and accessibility, 7th in terms of human resources, 2nd in terms of infrastructure, 21st in terms of local government units responsiveness and 17th in terms of quality of life.

Under its five-year development plan, NORECO 2 will push through with the establishment of a 5MVA sub-station next year in Dauin town, south of Dumaguete.

NORECO 2 general manager Ephraim Taclob said, the Dauin sub-station will handle the load distribution from Bacong and Valencia.

NegOr as sports
tourism hub eyed
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Oriental Negros is being eyed as a sports tourism hub, particularly for marathon races.

Dr. Aparicio Mequi, former Philippine Sports Commissioner, said that the province has a sports culture that can help put it on the map of sports tourism. Tourism, being a $45-billion industry, will earn for the country investments through sports.

"Even Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said we should now concentrate on promoting sports tourism in the Philippines," Mequi said at a recent Kapihan forum held by the Philippine Information Agency.
