Medical graduates from the University of Santo Tomas bagged the top two slots in the Physician Licensure Examination given this week, results of which were released by the Professional Regulation Commission last night.

UST graduates Patrick Leonardo Go Co achieved a rating of 86.83 to place first, followed by Bernadine Co Chua, with 85.00 percent.

Erwyn Carpela Novilla of the Cebu Institute of Medicine placed third with a rating of 84.67 percent, the PRC results showed.

Some 1,491 examinees, or about 55 percent of the total 2,696 aspirants, passed the licensure exams with the Iloilo City-based West Visayas State University placing fifth in the Top 10 list of Philippine medical schools with best passing averages.

WVSU posted a 79 percent passing average after 68 of its 86 graduates hurdled this year's board exams, the PRC said.

The University of the Philippines-Manila posted the highest passing average among medical schools, with 130 of its 134 graduates, or 97 percent, passing the board exams.

Second was CIM, with 67 successful examinees of 76 graduates, or 88 percent; in third was the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, with 87 of 101 graduates, or 86 percent, passing the exam, and in fourth was UST with 271 passers out of 322 graduates, or 84 percent. Completing the Top 10 performing medical schools are Saint Louis University, 60 passers of 80 graduates (75 percent); Xavier University, 37 passers of 54 graduates

(69 percent); Mindanao State University, 18 passers of 26 graduates (69 percent); Saint Luke's College of Medicine, 45 passers of 66 graduates (68 percent); Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation, 35 passers of 206 graduates (66 percent); and Ateneo de Zamboanga, 13 passers of 22 graduates (59 percent). Rounding off the Top 5 board passers are Beodaldy Paterno Bombeo of the Cebu Doctors College of Medicine in fourth, with 84.58 percent; and tying for fifth, Pamela Isa Evangelista Basilio of De La Salle University-Dasmariņas, and Leonard Cheung Lim of the University of the Philippines-Manila, both with 84.50 percent.

The rest of the Top 10 are Kristine Dueņas Tumebiene, UP-Manila - 84.08, 6th; Jun Maximo II Fuentespina Lasco, CIM, and John Paul Gerard Nazareno Rosales, UST - 84.00, 7th; Mark Algara Sison, UST, and Nathaniel Lum Yu Chua, UST - 83.67, 8th; John Patrick Aguilar Sia, UP-Manila, and Joseph Michael Romilla Zuņiga, UP-Manila - 83.58, 9th, and Mark Angelo Cabillon Ang, UP-Manila and Roxanne Giselle Go Lim, UP-Manila - 83.42, 10th.

The oath-taking ceremonies for successful examinees will be on Sept. 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila.

The registration for the issuance of professional identification cards and certificates of registration will begin Aug. 28, but no later than Sept. 11. Successful examinees are required to personally register and sign the Roster of Registered Professionals. Registration for membership in the Philippine Medical Association also starts on Aug. 28, 2006.*
