Bacolod paddlers
claim 7 Loptta titles

BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Paddlers from Bacolod City unleashed their fury, snatching seven out of the eight titles up for grabs in the 4th LOPTTA Age-Group Table Tennis Tournament at the Lopue's San Sebastian-Annex over the weekend.

Christian Dale Pescadeņa and Cherry Tiongco were at the forefront of the Bacoleņos' domination, topping their respective divisions in the 17-Under hostilities of the tournament that was backed by the Lopue's Table Tennis Association headed by its president Leonito "Diotay" Lopue. Pescadeņa outlasted Noah Trayco, 13-11, 11-13, 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, for the boys' 17-Under crown, while Cherry TIongco toppled Silaynon Mary Cris Catalan, 12-10, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, to reign supreme in the distaff side.

Trailing 1-6 in the fifth and deciding set, Pescadeņa, a student at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, delivered powerful kills to level the score at 10, before posting the next 2 points to claim the title.

Ma-ao bet Ferdie Lagdamas finished second runner-up in the boys' 17-Under category, while Bacoleņa Benjielyn Dayat placed third in the girls' 17-Under competitions.

Dayat registered a victory against Michelle Osorio of Pontevedra in the championship match of the girls' 14-Under division. Meryl Rojo of Ma-ao ended up in third place.

Osorio was actually the lone non-Bacolod paddler, who won a title after beating Pia Joy Pipito of Silay in the finals of the girls' 12-Under hostilities. Silaynon Rhea Barbasa came in second runner-up.

Danilo Abalos added another title for Bacolod when he reigned supreme in the boys' 14-Under hostilities by downing Isabela paddler Santiago Granada in the finals. Ma-ao standout Pablito Ariola registered a third place finish.

Bacoleņo Joash Andrew Tanque also delivered a crown by defeating Joel Montoya of Ma-ao in the boys' 14-Under championship match. John Paul Gubaton, also of Ma-ao, placed third.

Andres Bonifacio Elementary School student Edmund Garganian took the boys' 10-Under title, prevailing over Ma-ao bets Gubaton and Steven Gonzaga, who finished first and second runners-up, respectively.

Isabel Villanueva, a student of St. Scholastica's Academy, topped the distaff side, winning against Beverly Paulma of ABES. Shamel Pineda was the third placer. Tournament director Mark Jimenez said 124 paddlers saw action in the two-day event, adding that LOPTTA will hold the tournament on a quarterly basis. *CIT
