Nopsscea sportsfest
attracts 30 schools

Thirty schools will vie for the crowns at stake in the 26th Season of the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association that kicks off on Sept. 23 at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City.

The sports moderators of the schools finalized their entries during a meeting that was presided by NOPSSCEA Sports Task Force chairman Roger Banzuela at Room 10 of USLS yesterday

. Banzuela, who had served as the association's STF head from 1989-2004, said he is extending the deadline of the submission of entries to August 25 for the other schools that would still like to participate in the annual sports competitions.

Lotus Neo Ballpen held off a late surge by Po's Marketing to snap its six-game winning streak with a 78-74 victory in the 2nd Conference of the Fil-Sino Inter-color Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

Peter Galon connected on a jump shot and Chibon Uy added another free-throw connection with 30 seconds left in the game to give Lotus a 78-71 buffer after Arvin Gustilo narrowed the gap to 71-75 by hitting a pair of free throws with 1:30 remaining.

Trailing 54-68 in the fourth quarter, Bol Manaloto connected on two three-point attempts to spearhead an 8-0 spurt by Po's, trimming Lotus' advantage to 68-62, but Galon hit his opportunities from the charity stripe to keep them at bay

Negrense cagers
in UAAP action today

It's not only UAAP statistical leader Kenneth Bono, the burly but versatile center, who is making a big impact in Adamson University's big turnaround in the Philippines' premiere collegiate basketball league.

Although Bono's contribution cannot be overlooked, Adamson has also drawn inspiration from the improvement of Talisay-born cager Roel Hugnatan and Bacoleņo Leo Canuday.

The 6-foot-4 Hugnatan, whose brother, Reynel, is playing for Alaska in the PBA, is proving he deserves the playing-time given to him by coach Leo Austria by turning in double-doubles in both points and rebounds, while Canuday, an offensive-minded point guard, is on the verge of his breakout season with the Falcons.
