Bacolod Tay Tung High School and the Stallions defeated their
respective opponents over the weekend to share the lead in the 2nd
Basketball Unified Sports Group-Sharp Cup 17-Under Tournament at
the Po Hang Gym in Bacolod City.
BTTHS tripped Mansilingan Christian Academy, 90-84, Saturday
before posting an impressive 83-61 win against St. Benilde School
yesterday for a share of the top spot with a 2-0 slate.
The Stallions, comprised of players from Pueblo Rosario-Eroreco,
scored a 72-60 victory over SBS, mentored by Christian Escote, Saturday
to have a share of the lead.
Meanwhile, defending champion University of St. La Salle split
its first two assignments in the seven-team tournament that has
adopted a double-round robin format.
The Baby Stingers of coach Leo Casinillo drubbed University
of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 107-70, Saturday, before being stunned
by MCA, 87-92, yesterday.
Against St. Benilde, the Tay Tung cagers of coach Gerome Aledron
raced to a 24-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter behind
the 6 points of swingman John Francis Espina.
BTTHS, last year's losing finalist, continued to rely in its
balanced offensive attack in the second half to put the game away
after establishing a comfortable 39-17 buffer at halftime. Ralph
Uy poured in 19 points to spearhead Tay Tung's charge, while forward
Chris Sibaya contributed 10 markers. Center Alvin Qua and Don Aleksndr
Tan also posted solid number for BTTHS, chipping in 8 and 7 points,
respectively.
Topscoring for SBS was Renz Campos with 25 points, while
Brix Lagumbay and Chris John Toga launched their attacks from the
perimeter to finish with 14 and 11 markers, respectively.
In the encounter against MCA Saturday, Qua exploded for 28 points
to lead Tay Tung as Alan Pol Morales shot 17 markers. *CIT
