Negrense sportsman Roberto "Bert" Porras, the Philippine Lawn
Tennis Association regional vice-president for Western Visayas,
yesterday vowed to focus on grassroots development and help re-organize
tennis clubs in the region.
The appointment of Porras, 68, was formalized two weeks ago
when the former Negros Occidental Tennis Association president attended
the PHILTA Board Meeting in Manila, coinciding with the hosting
of the Group III matches of the Davis Cup.
Porras was initially appointed PHILTA Region VI-A officer-in-charge
by the tennis association's president, Manuel Misa. Porras said
the dwindling number of players coming out from the grassroots level
needs to be addressed by coming up with more tournaments and proper
training programs.
"We need to produce more top-notch players from the region,"
Porras said, adding that the PHILTA is hoping to ride on the momentum
brought by the victories of the RP Team in the Davis Cup Group III
event.
The RP Team, led by Fil-American touring professional Cecil
Mamiit and Eric Tainio, romped to a five-game sweep, beating Sri
Lanka, Singapore, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Porras, who gave up the NOTA presidency to concentrate on his
job as PHILTA regional head, succeeded Dr. Rex Jalando-on of the
La Carlota City Tennis Club. *CPT
