Environment Secretary Angelo Reyes will spearhead
the launching of the Green Philippine Highway Project on August
25 at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center in Dumaguete
City.
The project calls on all sectors to work towards
environmental protection and rehabilitation.
The DENR will lead in the nationwide simultaneous
tree planting dubbed "Green Philippine Highways" on Aug. 25, along
the West Nautical Highway from the boundary of Mabinay, Oriental
Negros and Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, to Tambubo Bay, Siaton
via Dumaguete. The DENR will provide technical support on the identification
and preparation of planting sites, provision of planting materials,
ensuring suitable plant species, preferably indigenous tree species
and coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways
in the transport of seedlings and participants.
Participating agencies will include the Department
of Education, Department of Interior and Local Government, Philippine
National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, local government
units, Department of Public Works and Highways, and other government
agencies. Non-government organizations, civic organizations, the
business sector as well as other religious organizations will join
in the activity.
A certificate of tree stewardship shall be awarded
to the adopters of the identified segments of the highway (ex. Km.
101 or Km. 103 or a 2 Km stretch for planting, care and maintenance
for a minimum period of three years.
A standard placard/billboard showing the name of
the adopter shall also be put up to reflect sponsorship of project
areas of the highways. Around 92 huge projects with a combined value
of P372 billion in the four super regions will be implemented under
the government's development plan.*RG

The Rotary Foundation Alumni Association of Negros
Occidental was formed recently through the efforts of Rotary Past
District Governor Lina Aurelio, Asia coordinator of the Rotary Foundation
Alumni Resource Group, with Rotarians Bernard "Bunny" Ong, Emma
Nava, Ricardo "Eric" Lavina, Ramon "Toto" Cua Locsin and Ramiro
"Chick" Garcia, Rotarian Junda Legislador said.
Ma. Richelia "Richie" Lazaro who was part of the
Rotary Group Study Exchange team who went to District 3620 in South
Korea in 2003 is the president.
Vice president is Ma. Rosario "Chart" Motus who
was with the team in 1992 that went to District 6400, Michigan,
USA and Ontario, Canada.
Ma. Cristina "Pinky" Corona is secretary, Ma.
Socorro "Ching" L. Sy is treasurer, while Angelo Angolo is Public
Relations Officer.
The GSE program of the Rotary Foundation is a unique
cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business
and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 and
in the early years of their professional lives, the organizers said.
The Rotary Foundation alumni association was formed to allow member
to reconnect and offer assistance to inbound and outbound teams,
represent views on how to improve the program, and to offer financial
contributions to TRF, among others.*
