PNP: NegOr ranked 2nd
most peaceful province

Oriental Negros is second to the island province of Siquijor in the list of the most peaceful provinces in the country today, the Philippine National Police provincial command said yesterday.

PNP provincial director Senior Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe and Dumaguete City police chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos said the rating was based on the monthly statistics report of the national police based in Camp Crame.

Buenafe said it is for this reason that many investors are confident in investing in Dumaguete City and the influx of foreign and domestic tourists has been continuing.

Carlos said contrary to insinuations, most of the crimes in the city are considered "petty crimes" such as theft, and that, an increase of these crimes was expected because of the increasing population.

On the other hand, he said, many people were careless about their things.

Dumaguete City and Oriental Negros were lucky, both police officials said, because their leaders and the business sector were helping the police in the anti-crime campaign.

The city police has taken measures to prevent criminal incidents.

These include sending out leaflets on tips to secure belongings and the conduct of regular check points, and chokepoints.*
