CENRO producing
fertilizer from garbage
BY RENE GENOVE

The Dumaguete City Community Environment and Natural Resources Office is now producing organic fertilizer from biodegradable garbage it collects.

Rogelio Clamonte, CENRO chief said, his office produces 60 bags of organic fertilizer in 45 days, sold for P50 per bag or P2.50 per 300 grams.

His office is employing the "vermi composting" technology or the use of the African Night Crawler earthworms, Clamonte said.

Clamonte explained that the biodegradable garbage are fed to the earthworms. The manure of the earthworms' becomes organic fertilizer, he said.

"We are promoting recycling, that is why we have undertaken this endeavor. Our intention is not really to earn, but we are also trying to encourage others to do the same for their livelihood," Clamonte said.

At present, the fertilizer produced by the CENRO is selling like hot cakes among City Hall employees, who have apparently noticed the effects of organic fertilizer on their plants, he said.*RG
