| The
city government has appropriated P75.2 million for various road projects in Dumaguete
from 2001 to April 20 this year. City Hall issued the statement to clarify
a published report, (not in this paper), quoting city administrator Dominador
Dumalag as saying that, the figure is "not totally correct." Of the amount,
the Philippine Ports Authority allocated P12 million for the concreting of Flores
Avenue and P45 million came from the 20 percent development fund with appropriation
ordinances from the Sangguniang Panlungsod of the city, City Hall added.
Dumalag said the Oriental Negros government and the 2nd Congressional District
have also allotted funds for the cementing projects of the city as part of a joint
collaborative effort to prepare the city roads, in terms of convenience to the
transport sector, and for tourism purposes being the show window of the province.
City planners said the cost of maintaining dilapidated roads will run to millions
of pesos. The only way to save on high cost of maintaining roads is to
cement them all, they added. Dumalag said the city now saves at least
P10 million a year with concreted roads, aside from the convenience to the transport
sector and the public. Meanwhile, some mayors said they are worried that
they will miss the opportunity of acquiring a sanitary landfill with funding from
the provincial government because of bickering among Dauin municipal officials
as sanitary landfill host.*JG back to
