Palarong Pambansa-bound netters Martina Guba and Tao Yee Tan crushed
their respective first round rivals yesterday at the start of the
Head Penn Junior Tennis Tournament at the Negros Occidental Tennis
Association shell courts in Bacolod City.
The defending 14 and 16-Under girls' champion Guba cruised
to a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sheryn Masellones in the 14-Under
category, while Tan overpowered Natasha Gaston, 6-0, 6-0, in the
18-Under girls' competitions. Both Guba, who hails from La Carlota
City, and Tan are using the tournament as a build up for their campaigns
in the national Palaro in Naga City, Bicol from May 7 to 13.
Bacoleņa Roxane Alipala escaped Martha Alisen, 6-4, 5-7, 9-7,
in the 14-Under girls' division, while Ronalyn Singson pounded Juvilyn
Bogaitan, 6-1, 6-2. Nikki Do demolished Michelle Espaņosa, 6-0,
6-1, in the other 18-Under girls' match.
Ilonggo Ralph Vincent Sobrevega outlasted University of St.
La Salle student Ian Filoteo, 6-3, 2-6, 20-18 during their 16-Under
boys' encounter as Kristoff Carmona shrugged off a rusty start to
register a 7-5, 6-1 triumph against Jehu Novilla.
Mark Cabag overwhelmed Ramon Arbuez, 6-4, 6-1, while Eladio
Pilares survived Marvin Umadhay, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 11-9. John Aba
ripped Edmundo Filoteo, 6-2, 6-1, as Nico Ligayo enjoyed a walkover
win against Jasper Nido. JR Dominguez trampled Ligayo, 6-0,
6-2, in the 14-Under boys' category, while Melissa Sobrevega of
Iloilo outclassed Victoria Emnace, 6-0, 6-2 in the 12-Under girls'
division. Leomar Domingo beat Hannad Emnace, 6-0, 6-1, in the 10-Under
unisex competitions.
Tournament director Rene Bergavera said the winners of the
event will rack up their points in the Philippine Lawn Tennis Association
and will receive trophies and other lawn tennis accessories.
NOTA president Vicenter Buga-ay said the Bacolod leg, which is
the fifth of 10 legs, has 110 competitors. *CIT
