NOFA U-17
San Carlos booters
gunning for 2 titles
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

San Carlos City eye two crowns today when it plays in the finals of the Negros Occidental Football Association Under-17 Interclub Provincial Football Championships and the NOFA Red Ribbon Under-15 Football Championships at the University of St. La Salle pitch.

The San Carlos booters thrashed Pontevedra, 6-0, yesterday to book a place in the finals of the Under-17 competitions, after its Under-15 squad scored a resounding 13-0 victory over St. Benilde Integrated School to earn a ticket to the title showdown.

West Negros College nipped Victorias City, 2-1, to gain the other finals slot in the Under-17 tournament, while Pontevedra edged Ma-ao United, 1-0, in the other Under-15 semifinals. The Dennis Peņalosa-mentored San Carlos Under-17 squad tackles WNC in the finals at 2:30 p.m., after its Under-15 booters collide with Pontevedra at 1 p.m.

The champion in the Under-17 tournament will represent NOFA in the national finals set from May 26 to 28 in Cebu.

Ronald Tamsi spearheaded San Carlos' brilliant offense in the Under-17 semifinals against Pontevedra, striking goals in the 56th and 83rd minutes. John Mulliken broke the ice for San Carlos in the 2nd minute.

Solidifying the victory for San Carlos were Ralph Christian Layumas, Lope Mayagma and Geshan Nardo as they booted in goals in the 35th, 75th and 86th minutes, respectively. In the other Under-17 semifinal encounter, an out-of-sync WNC squad needed the heroics of Gino Palomo, who blasted an inside the box goal in the 83rd minute, to pull off a nail-biting victory against a feisty Victorias team.

Victorias' Raymark Fernandez tied the score at 1 after capitalizing on a fumble by the West Negros defenders inside the box. Carlos Reola opened the scoring for the Wesnecans in the 3rd minute.

In the Under-15 hostilities, Archie Pamiliar struck four goals to power the offense of San Carlos against SBIS, while Pontevedra's Jimwel Ariola converted a header in the 37th minute to post the lone goal during its semifinal match against Ma-ao. *CIT
