of carnapping raps
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A carnapping suspect was acquitted and freed from jail following the dismissal of his case yesterday by the Regional Trial Court Branch 44 at the Halls of Justice, in Dumaguete City.

Acquitted was Alexis Caņete, 26, who was found out not to be the actual carnapper by Presiding Judge Candelario Gonzalez of RTC Branch 44. Court records show that on March 19, 2001, the red Honda Econo registered in the name of Godofredo Yong was carnapped while it was parked near the Garahe, by John Rey Bacario.

Due to a number of violations, it was flagged down by elements of the Traffic Management Office who did not know that it had been carnapped. It was then driven by Bacario who slipped away from the scene, records added.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region 7 has distributed more than 500,000 fingerlings of Genetically-Enhanced Tilapia for Excellence or GET-EXCEL to boost tilapia production in the province.

The tilapia fingerlings were immediately distributed to several cooperatives, barangay agricultural development centers and private individuals for propagation in their respective areas.

Bayawan City directly received 200,000 of GET-EXCEL fingerlings, according to BFAR assistant regional director Andres Bujos.

Two American missionaries were held up at gunpoint inside their rented house Monday night, at E. J. Blanco Extension, Kalubihan, Daro, Dumaguete City.

The victims Donald Douglas Werley, 62, of North Carolina, and Mary Johanna Melen Werley, 61, of Ontario, Canada, were divested of 150 US dollars and P500 in cash, an undetermined amount of jewelry, and other personal belongings. The culprits gained entrance by scaling the roof of the comfort room, to reach the arch window grill, then detached and slashed the screen of the west side of the house, police said.
