DENR distributes
tilapia fingerlings

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region 7 has distributed more than 500,000 fingerlings of Genetically-Enhanced Tilapia for Excellence or GET-EXCEL to boost tilapia production in the province.

The tilapia fingerlings were immediately distributed to several cooperatives, barangay agricultural development centers and private individuals for propagation in their respective areas.

Bayawan City directly received 200,000 of GET-EXCEL fingerlings, according to BFAR assistant regional director Andres Bujos.

Gov. George Arnaiz said that, in the remaining months of his administration he will push for massive tilapia breeding in hinterland barangays to augment and address protein deficiency in some areas.

A central hatchery to genetically enhanced tilapia is planned for construction in the hinterland barangay of Bais City that is capable of producing 1.5 million fingerlings every year.

The governor said he intends to regularly ask for stocks from the region that is producing 7 million tilapia fingerlings every year. This will augment and complement the production of 3 million bangus fries every year from the central bangus hatchery that is also located in Bais City.*
