Ceres Liners overpowered Toyota Bacolod-Iloilo Warriors, 95-84, last night to complete a three-game sweep of the opening round of the 2006 Negros Basketball Association-Mayor's Cup Summer Open Basketball Tournament in front of a big crowd at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

The Ceres stalwarts, mentored by Oscar Aquino, grabbed the solo lead with a 3-0 slate, while Toyota suffered its first loss in three games.

In the first game, Sipalay All-Stars nipped JS Shell, 80-77, to barge into the win column. Sipalay improved to 1-2, while JS Shell, bannered by University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos cagers, dropped to 0-3.

The Negros Occidental provincial government is planning to make the Paglaum Sports Complex in Bacolod City a regional development center for sports, Jose Marie Valencia, chief of staff of the Gov. Joseph Maraņon, said yesterday.

Valencia said the plan will be discussed with consultants on April 19, before Capitol representatives meet with Department of Education officials and Negros Occidental High School stakeholders.

Maraņon had announced earlier the provincial government's move to recover the sports stadium, which it had donated to the DepEd, because of its failure to maintain the facility.

National billiards tilt slated
BY CEDELF TUPAS

The 1st National Juniors 10 Balls Billiards Challenge is set from May 22 to 28 at the Celebrity Billiard Hall at 22nd Lacson Street, Bacolod City.

About 800 competitors are expected to play in the 16-Under event that is open to all players who are in-school, Art Puentevella, secretary-general of the Negros Occidental Billiards and Snooker Association, said in a press conference at the Apollo Restaurant yesterday.

"Drop-outs and out of school youth are not allowed to see action in the tournament because we want to promote sports and education at the same time," George Martir of The Liaison Officers Association of the League of Cities of the Philippines, said.
