Powerhouse Ceres Liners started its campaign on a bright note after beating two rivals over the weekend in the 2006 Negros Basketball Association-Mayor's Cup Summer Open Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

The Oca Aquino-mentored cagers nipped JS Shell, 89-85, Saturday, before shrugging off a sluggish start to register an 81-76 victory yesterday over Sipalay All-Stars.

JS Shell, bannered by cagers from University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, suffered its second setback after losing to Toyota Bacolod-Iloilo Warriors, 76-77.

Villamonte, Estafania
prevail in Monico Cup

Barangays Villamonte and Estefania survived tough opponents yesterday to score their first wins in the 26-Under division of the 2006 Monico Cup Inter-Barangay Summer Basketball Tournament at the Pahanocoy Gym in Bacolod City.

Villamonte needed a come-from-behind effort to dispose Brgy. Montevista, 78-71, in Bracket D, while Estefania relied on its balanced offensive attack to escape Brgy. 12, 82-81, during their overtime encounter in Bracket C.

Brgys. 25-26 turned back Brgy. 9, 68-53, in Bracket A as Brgy. Cabug clipped Brgy. 7, 66-63, in Bracket C. In the other Bracket D match, Brgy. 10 registered an 89-73 victory over Brgy. 17.

Doņa Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School gained the first seed going into the semifinal round despite absorbing a 25-23, 17-25, 25-19 setback Saturday at the hands of University of St. La Salle in the Shakey's Girls' 18-Under Volleyball Invitational League Negros Occidental Eliminations at the USLS College Covered Court in Bacolod City.

The La Carlota-based DHSBNHS squad finished the eliminations as the top team with a 6-1 slate, while Negros Occidental High School enters the semifinals as the second seed with a 5-2 win-loss card.
