The Oriental Negros and Dumaguete City offices of the Commission on Election are poised to verify the signatures of all voters who signed in the people's initiative campaign to change the Constitution during the barangay assemblies held late last week.

Manuel Advincula, COMELEC assistant regional director was in Dumaguete City early this week to start what he called the "menu of the day," or to begin the signature verification in compliance with the order of their central office. Advincula said his next round of visits will be in Siquijor to make sure that all COMELEC offices comply with the order of Commissioner Resurrecion Borra.

The provincial and city election offices received the order Monday.

The Dumaguete City Council has passed a resolution commending Gov. George Arnaiz and the members of Task Force 24 for their "relentless effort" to curb criminality and maintain peace and order in Dumaguete and its neighboring municipalities.

Sponsored by Councilor Esperidion Catan, the resolution that was passed during the session of the council Thursday, noted that the task force "has tremendously contributed to the curtailment or reduction in the incidence of crime and in subsequent arrests of criminals."

DOLE garnishes NORECO 2
properties for workers' wages

The Department of Labor and Employment is now conducting garnishment proceedings on the bank deposits of the Negros Oriental 11 Electric Cooperative to ensure payment of P15.9 million in backwages to 181 of its employees.

DOLE Region 7 officer-in-charge, Elias Cayanong, in a phone interview said his office has already notified several NORECO 2 depository banks in Dumaguete to put on hold deposits of the electric cooperative.

Garnishment is a "process in which money or goods in the hands of a third person which are due a defendant, are attached by the plaintiff; such as property controlled by a third person which is owed to or belongs to a debtor is used to repay a debt of the debtor…"
