A list with more than 5,000 signatures of Bacolod City voters
supporting the people's initiative for charter change was submitted
to the Commission on Elections in Bacolod City for verification
yesterday, Provincial COMELEC supervisor Daisy Real said.
Real, however, said she asked the persons who submitted the
list to re submit it today with the required cover letter. She said
the list did not include signatures from all of the barangays of
Bacolod City and she was told that more were to come from Barangay
Alijis.
Real said signatures were also submitted for verification in
Victorias City.
Earlier, signatures were also submitted for verification at
the COMELEC offices in Escalante City, and Calatrava, La Castellana,
Isabela, Pulupandan, Binalbagan and Cauayan towns, she said. Presidential
Spokesman Ignacio Bunye yesterday said opposition to the people's
initiative in amending the Constitution is driven by fear of the
politicians that it is a one-way ticket to lose their grip on power.
"Those opposed to true constitutional reforms are being
exposed for what they are. They brand anything that threatens them
as illegal despite constitutional guarantees that give the people
the right to seek amendments to our Constitution," he said in a
press statement.
In the first election under a parliamentary system, a senator
who wishes to seek a parliamentary seat is likely to battle it out
toe-to-toe with the congressman of the district, the press statement
said.*CPG
