3 killed, 2 hurt in mishap
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Two sons and a relative of a police couple died in a vehicular accident at about 1:45 a.m. yesterday in Manapla, Negros Occidental.

Killed on the spot at the highway of Brgy. Tortosa, Manapla, were Neil Edwin Alimpolo, and his brother, Neil Irwin. Their cousin, Arlene Batolina, was declared dead on arrival at the Our Lady of Mercy Specialty Hospital in Bacolod City, the police said.

The mother of the two fatalities, SPO3 Sherlita Alimpolo, who sustained critical head injuries, and their brother, Neil Edward, who was also injured, are now being treated at the same hospital.

SPO3 Sherlita Alimpolo is the communications chief of the Victorias City Police Station, while her husband, SPO4 Edwin Alimpolo, served as chief investigator of the Silay police, police records show.

Manapla police chief Fructuso Lim yesterday said the Alimpolo family was on their way to the Ika-ayong Lawas Foundation Hospital in Victorias City, when the tricycle they were riding, driven by a certain Aloy Repaso, slammed into the rear of a cargo truck parked on the shoulder of the road in the barangay.

Police investigations show that Repaso was blinded by glaring lights from an oncoming vehicle bound for northern Negros, when he tried to pass the stalled cargo truck driven by Ariel Villanueva.

As Repaso tried to avoid the oncoming vehicle, his sidecar slammed into the rear of the cargo truck, Lim said.

Repaso, who was thrown out from his tricycle as a result of the strong impact, disappeared after being treated for minor injuries at the Ika-ayong Lawas Foundation Hospital in Victorias City, he added.

Manhunt operations are now ongoing for Repaso who may be charged for reckless driving, Lim said.

He also noted the failure of the cargo truck driver to put up an early warning device.

Senior Supt. Modesto Sanson, Victorias police chief, yesterday said Mayor Severo Palanca promised to extend financial assistance to SPO3 Alimpolo, formerly chief of the city police Women and Children's Concerned Desk.

Neil Edwin who had just graduated from a Criminology Course at the University of Negros Occidental Recoletos, and Neil Edwin, a second year law student, wanted to join the police force, colleagues of SPO3 Alimpolo at the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, said.

Hours before the accident, two cargo trucks also collided along the national highway of Brgy. Tortosa, Manapla. Nobody was injured, but the two trucks were damaged, Lim said.*GPB
