'Cops doing
best vs. crimes'
BY RENE GENOVE

Dumaguete City police chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos reiterated to barangay officials, private groups, and city employees that the police is doing its best to stop the series of cellphone snatchings and hold-ups in the city.

He clarified, though, that the active involvement of the public is vital in stopping the menace.

Carlos was speaking at a forum at the city session hall organized by the city police to inform the public how to avoid falling victim to cellphone snatchings.

He said the increasing number of cellphone users has given rise to cellphone thefts with snatchers getting bolder every day, preying on teenagers, students, and employees.

He said that in many cases, the snatchers resort to violence when victims resist or fight back.

The police chief advised the public to bring their cellphones when they go out only if they need them during the day, and place the unit in their pockets or bags where it is not visible.

If there is an urgent need to use the cellphone while outside, they should go to a secured place such as inside stores, near security guards, near police stations, inside offices, or even in comfort room cubicles, police further advised users.

Carlos also enjoined the public to walk in well-lighted places, and, when walking alone, to be on guard for persons following. If this happens, they should walk towards an area where there are people to be able to ask for help.

Most important, cellphone owners must avoid using or displaying their units in public, the police chief added.*RG
