Blaze hits convent
in Valladolid
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

The convent of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Valladolid caught fire at around 8 p.m. yesterday.

Valladolid police chief, Senior Inspector Rico Santotome, said nobody was injured during the fire that raged for about one hour before it was controlled.

Faulty electrical wirings are being eyed as the cause of the fire in the convent that was erected in 1850.

The convent, which was the first edifice to be constructed in Valladolid, is mostly made up of combustible materials making it more susceptible to fire, fire reports said.

Santotome said the cost of the damage has yet to be determined.

Valladolid Mayor Ricardo Presbitero said only the stone structure of the two-story convent remained last night.

Priceless church items and all the belongings of Fr. Fred Gamarcha were destroyed in the fire, Presbitero said.*CIT
