BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Doņa Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School, St. Joseph's High School-La Salle and Negros Occidental High School trounced their respective rivals yesterday at the start of the Shakey's 18-Under Girls Volleyball Invitational League Negros Occidental Eliminations at the University of St. La Salle College Covered Court in Bacolod City.

The La Carlota City-based DHSBNHS squad made quick work of St. Benilde School, 25-13, 25-16, in the opening match behind Teresa Valdez and Mae Roldan, who combined for 14 kills.

The SJS-La Salle volleybelles smashed USLS, 25-16, 25-16, in the second encounter, while NOHS posted an impressive 25-22, 25-11 victory against Bata National High School.

The champion in Negros will take on the winners from Iloilo, Cebu and Manila in the Shakey's Tournament of Champions slated June 1 to 3 in Manila.

The Manila eliminations is scheduled to kick off on April 22, while the elimination rounds in Iloilo and Cebu are set on April 24 and the first week of May, respectively.

Tournament organizer Freddie Infante of Metro Sports said this the third year that Shakey's has been sponsoring the event, but it is being held in Negros for the first time.

The tournament is being staged annually to hasten the development of indoor volleyball in the grassroots level, he said, adding that it also serves as another venue for players to showcase their skills.

Lino Uy, managing director of Shakey's Bacolod-Robinson's Place, said the tournament is an exciting event where the different volleyball girls' teams from Negros will be able to test each other's mettles.

The Negros eliminations tournament, which has drawn nine squads, is being supported by Shakey's, Dunkin Donuts, Toby's Sports, Air Philippines, Asics and Mikasa, the official volleyball of the league. *CIT
