Nat'l Palaro slated
May 7-13 in Naga
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

The staging of the 2006 Palarong Pambansa is set from May 7 to 13 at the Metro Naga Sports Complex in Naga City, Bicol.

Victoriano Tirol Jr., regional director of the Western Visayas Department of Education, said the coaches and officials of the Region VI contingent will meet next week to prepare for the national Palaro.

The selection of players who will don the colors of Western Visayas in the national meet will also be taken up during the meeting, Tirol told the DAILY STAR.

Tirol said he is satisfied with the assigned billeting quarters for the Region VI delegation after visiting the accommodation facility in Naga City last week.

The Western Visayas contingent, composed of athletes from Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, Aklan and Guimaras, placed first runner-up overall in both the elementary and secondary divisions of the national meet in Iloilo City last year.

National Capital Region amassed 306.5 points last year to bring home the overall championship of the secondary division, while the Calabarzon athletes accumulated 235 points to snatch the overall crown of the elementary hostilities.

Events lined up in the elementary category are the boys and girls' divisions of athletics, badminton, baseball, chess, gymnastics, lawn tennis, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball, and the boys' football and sipa, and little league softball.

Calendared in the secondary competitions are the boys and girls' archery, athletics, chess, badminton, lawn tennis, gymnastics, table tennis, swimming, volleyball and taekwondo, girls' softball, and the boys' basketball, baseball and boxing.

The Negrenses swept the overall championships of the elementary and secondary divisions during the regional meet in Roxas City last month.

Meanwhile, Tirol said he is still waiting for the arrival of Dr. Eden Deriada, chairperson of the Region VI Physical Education and School Sports, from Manila before they will evaluate the explanation letter of baseball coach Narciso Jayme.

Jayme, mentor of the Neg. Occ. secondary boys' baseball team during the regional meet, fielded an ineligible player in the semifinals against Capiz, which filed a protest that was upheld by the Board of Jury.

Tirol said the sanctions for Jayme's actions will be announced by the Western Visayas DepEd within the week. *CIT
